Recommendations/suggestions

Okay so this is probably going to be a very vague thread with a lot of recommendations but here it goes. My run around at the moment is an 8v mk2 but I want rid and I'm looking for something else. I want to spend around 5k and I need something that has decent mpg as I can sometimes do 500+ miles a week. However my milage varies a lot and some weeks I can only drive 50 miles. It can't nail me on insurance either as I'm only 20. Thing is, I want something fun to drive as I can do a lot of driving. I have no idea what to go for. French cars need not apply and all Beemers and Alfas give me ass-raping quotes. Atm I have no idea what to plump for.

Not necessarily. I don't need 50 mpg. The lad I work with is banned from driving, so I drive everywhere and he pays just over half, essentially halving my fuel bill I'd be happy with about 30 and it's mostly motorway miles. Golfs bore the life out of me tbh.

i have to say i like these alot, i dont think id want one tho cos its a rover but they are nice to drive and the 160 is quick.

id say a alfa 156 jtd remapped, cheap insurance, quicker than the petrols

also, the audi a3 tdi sport, amazing car, i want one after driving one of them! bloody quick this one was, not sure if it was remapped or something but really threw u back in the seat.

I'm leaving the A3 because I'm planning to get a new tdi s-line next year when my wages increase. This is going to be the car inbetween the mk2 and that. Lupo GTI and Glanza were both my first thought and they are still in the running. I really like the idea of a 156 and I hadn't thought of that. Only downside is the insurance quotes are £300-odd (knocking on 2k for the 1.9) more than a Lupo or Glanza. Hmmmmm...do I just cough up the extra insurance dough and feel like the insruance companbies are ripping me off?
