I remember xploit had that airbox on his GT1 a while back at an RR. IIRC he got an extra 8bhp by taking the enclosed one off and putting on a K&N.

When he reached a adequate amount of boost the flap opened which then allowed the full potential of the turbo to come in to place. Maybe he could look into doing something like this?
    Porsche - variable vein turbos...

VVT's aren't very widely used on petrol engines simply because they can't deal with the stresses exerted on them by a petrol engine, very common on a turbo diesel though

fitted a vnt/vvt/vgt turbo whatever you want to call them, had a custom one on a gt about 6 years ago, they are a great design, but as andy said the std non water cooled turbo cant cope with the high exhaust temp produced by a petrol engine. it had early spool, mininal lag but was dead in 2000miles. they are fitted to 90% of diesel engines but its very common for the veins to carbon up and partially seize causing over boost. replaced/repaired 4 last month with this issue. everything has advantages and disadvantages.

Indeed it is common for them to play up. More moving parts to seize

He needs to get rid of it, far better alternatives, wack a vent infront of the airfilter (if it doesnt already) and stick a badboy like this on. Of course not this one...as there are better alternatives (hey it cost me nothing back in the day)
