There are a lot of high powered 5's out there that still run carbs. They are a nightmare to set up though, you always have to have a fairly substantial compromise somewhere. When you de-choke them that also makes them a nightmare to start cold.
They've always suffered with hot starting problems due to having the carburettor located directly above the exhaust manifold (not a cross-flow engine). After the initial run Renault fitted an anti-perculation fan which blew air onto the carburettor fuel chamber, and also into the air inlet pipework by means of a solenoid.
Renault would of done themselves proud if they had of developed them on fuel injection, the carburettor, and the fact you can just pull the wires off the overboost pressure switch, and crank the boost up means its incredibly easy to make them run lean and go bang!
The EFI conversion is expensive as obviously it requires a custom made inlet manifold amongst many other things, defintitely worth it though. The Raider is going to be a long and drawn out project but i will try and start and maintain a project thread for it
