flat 4 is over complicated for what it is, and the subaru one isnt all that reliable and they had to go to a 2.5 litre to keep up performance wise.
flat 4s are limited by capacity, so its always going to be a small engine compared to a 6litre V12 aston or a 8litre V10 dodge...
No doubt, multi cylinders sounds the tits but not all straight 4s sound poo.

Nice!
Talking about pistons exclusively here... One of the best sounds ever is the Mazda quad rotar wankel!

Id be buzzing off my tits if ever heard one live!
I've heard a triple rotor at pod and that was orgasmic
It has to be said, 4cyl engines do sound crap, especially compared to 8, 10, and 12 cylinders. I'm not really a fan of 6's and 4's, but can make an exception for 5's, as the off beat burble gives them a different twist. Listen to an Audi Quattro SWB and you'll see what I mean - best sounding low capacity engine with less than 8 cylinders.
Skyline straight 6 sounds ace
Swell as the BMW straight 6's too
Personally. I like the Nissan V6.
