    Suggest me a Daily Driver.

As per title, just looking for some suggestions for a new daily driver.

Been driving a 1.5 dci clio for the last year + and just had enough now. It's fantastically cheap, 70mpg, £35 road tax and chepa insurance....but its just too boring and cramped (6'5" tall).

Have been looking at VW passat 1.8 20vt for a while. Can pick up a nice B5.5 (2001-2005) for around £3k now. Just looking if anyone has any other suggestions. I am pretty open minded as to what i get...it just must meet certain requirements:

At least 30mpg real world daily driving (Car will be converted to run off lpg so equivelent ~ 60mpg.)
Comfortable - nice ride and cruise control etc.

Something with a bit of poke would be nice but fuel economy and luxuries come first as this is a daily.

So fire away with your suggestions...

    Thanks

Mk. 2 "big dam" Golf GTI 16V. Getting rare and appreciating. Could get 40+ mpg with "careful" driving. Had full aftermarket air-con. on one, some had optional factory-fitted leather, air-con etc. Trip computer std., cruise control option, IIRC.

Well i will always endorse a Cinq.

I ragged the tits off it everywhere i went, took it off road on plenty of occasions use to handbrake it round corners just because i could, bump it into things, drive it over things, leave it anywhere. Obviously the clutch gave out in Dam and needed a new CV after one insane handbrake skid into a mates drive way but it cost me £40 to fix over 9months and you probably cant get or run anything for less.

You can sit in the back if your that massive!

A car which is appreiciating would be a bonus but im looking for something more modern, reliability is a key factor. What you mean "big dam"? Will look into it.

Forgot to add....looking to spend around £3k

    Thanks

The Golf 1.8 16V engine is hugely reliable, they're not "run-in" until >50K miles, it's said. The Mk. 2 chassis is the best and there's loads of upgrade possibilities. The last Mk. 2s had a big bumper/airdam, rather than the silly little chin-spoiler my first one had and is the more attractive, IMHO, with std. fog/driving lights in the bumper. Nice front lighting setup too, none of this peering into the dimness.

Thats how im feeling. I dont want a car i will have to spend any money on.

Im looking more for a comfortable cruiser, hence the passat.

Really? Always like the ST200's when i was younger. My mother has a 2001 mondy now and while its nice...never really tickled my fancy.

I wouldnt mind an ST220 but it doesnt really fit the bill.

    What model would you suggest?

I have also been looking at Astra coupes. I drove a 1.8 on lpg, it felt very rigid in the bends and connected to the road (wasnt going fast, just felt very solid).
