When installing XP it will give you an option to install on the existing partition or create a new one

Or if you old skool put in a boot disk and type "FDISK"

Still, that's 6 months, then you'll need to install another OS.

cool so i can literally burn the iso to disc, boot from that then create a new partition on my drive and not worry about backing anything up to do with xp? might give this a shot when i get in, downloaded it lastnight.

    no

Ideally you willl have to backup all your data, then format your drive and split it into three partitions. then install windows 7 on one, and xp or whatever you use on the other, then you can place your docs onto the third partition, and access them from xp or 7, whichever one your using at the time

that would be the ideal, but for the time being can i safely do the above without worrying or would backing up files be a gd idea? will just run 7 on its own without access to my files in all probability

well no that wont work, you cannot partition a drive once it has had an OS installed on it, using a windows installer, as it needs formatting first. You can buy fancy partition software that can do this but I forget what its called. If you dont do this, then you will HAVE to backup your data otherwise it will be lost
