IIRC you'll need a router of some description.

My friend has Orange Broadband with the Lifebook wireless router. He connects his Wii wirelessly and it works perfectly.

Have you got wireless? If so, the Wii should pick it straight up because wifi is built in.

If not, then you need a usb-ethernet adapter.
Just type into google "wii usb ethernet" and it will come up with loads of places to buy one.
Then all you do is plug the adapter into the wii and then your ethernet cable into the adapter.

    They'll charge the earth.

Buy yourself a wireless router. I use a Belkin wireless router with my NTL modem. Works perfectly.

I don't know how virgin media works tbh. But I'm guessing if its hard-wired then yeah you need a different router/modem. One with wireless preferably.

Ethernet cable from your modem goes into the WAN port on the router. Then you can connect your PC using another Ethernet cable to the router. You Wii will connect wirelessly to the router.
