Well the engine is obviously not turnig over so it has to be related to the starter motor in some way like you though.

Sounds to me like the teeth on the starter have sheared and is just clipping the flywheel.....or maybe is some how come lose....have you have a look at the motor at all?

Your starter motor is knackered. The noise is the starter motor buzzing over and not engaging on the fly wheel. The solonoid is fubbered witch means the starter motor isnt engaging. I think you've gotta get a new starter motor. £80 from a motor factors if you trade yours in.

Na I reconise the sound because my sporting has done this on the odd occasion. But it usually engages on the second try.

With the remote start, if i dont let go off buttons quick enough, the starter motor continues for a second while the engine has started and running and you get that crunch sound. I think that was the cause?

Just had a another thought. Just check all the wiring going to the starter motor. A wire might have come off. I doubt it but you might be lucky.

Most likely was the cause. If the starter motor was hanging on it wouldn't do it any good I shouldn't think.

It made a noise while a was driving at 30, just about to turn and park 50ms down the road. Like a crunching and scrapping. so if a wire came loose, would that have caused it to try and start whilst driving making it brake?

Dont think so Mate. You'll just have to take a look at it. Its easy enough to remove. Disconnect the wires going to it, I think theres two held on by a 10mm nut. 3 x 13mm bolts hold the starter motor on.
