    home networks

    Ive just bought a 500gb hdd

    I want to connect this to my desktop computer in the lounge and store all my stuff on this drive.

    I then want to be able to acsess this drive from my laptop on my wireless router and g card from upstairs or outside to play music and stuff
    can it be done and how do i do it.

    Easy,

    you just need to map a network drive then make ya playlists on the laptop point to the the music on the desktop HD, also files you can access them through "My Computer" as a normal drive if its mapped.

    What OS is on the PC?

    If it is Win XP, then:

    Open My Computer > Right click the drive you want to share > Go to Sharing and Security > Change the setting to share the drive and give it a share name > Set the permissions > Click OK.

    Then on the laptop (if it's Win XP) go to:

    Right Click My Computer > Click Map Network Drive > in the box type \\PC name\share name and click OK.

    only thing is this is an external drive. does that matter.

    Nope. It's still visible in My Computer. So you can share it.

    got stung for vat of which im not happy about as it wasnt on the listing. so payed 117 quid.
