    Sp2

Is service pack 2 ok now?

I remember ages ago when it first came out it was crap and no-one reccomended it. But that was a very long time ago!

Just wondering is it worth downloading now, or is SP1 still worth sticking with?

    Excellent.

Formatted 2 HDD and backed up all my data onto them. Ready for formating of the final HDD and installation of windows afresh!

I shall download sp2 this time round.

****ed, the windows xp cd i have is an OEM CD for some reason, but the serial code I got (its legit) did not come with a computer, rather a seperate package.

So I need to find a standard xp installation cd!

you might wanna download the SP2 update and then slipstream it onto a new copy rther than buying a new CD.

search google "slipstreaming SP2" would bring up instructions i would have thought.

The people not reccomending it were the people attempting to install it on 486s with a third of a mb of RAM and 2k of available disk space.

Download and install any update Microsoft release, whether it be a service pack or an update for Outlook which makes all emails advertising 'get your willy go longer than your leg' go straight into your junk folder.

for home use this is generally sound advice. However in the office can be different. Turning off automatic update is probably one of the first things to do on a server.

The main problem being updates aren't 'tested' in a dummy environment before deploying them to your servers/network.

The second being some updates automatically reboot the file server. I think you can probably imagine the issues here.
