if i had the head off id be tempted to do a top and tail.pull pistons and check rings at same time little bit more work but at least youve got the satisfaction of checking your rings and piston wear while its off the road for a little bit more work.if you can buy a cheap head why not check the valves are ok and re fit them to the replacement head.not hard work to use a spring compressor and injector puller!and some of your engine will have at least been re sealed and gasketed when it goes back together.
im having a little trouble trying to find a head from a 75sx (mpi), does anyone know of any breakers/anyone getting rid of a decent head/engine from a 75sx?

They found me a 1.2 16v engine when i needed one.

ive got another quote, garage want £800 for head and gasket from fiat and labour, but will take time to order parts

£200 to fit a new engine into the car, so i think this is deffinately the way i will go. So now looking for a cheap complete engine, from 1.2 to 1.6
