It's the right dongle by the sounds of things, yes.
It may be good for up to 180 ft, with nothing in between, excellent modem, bla bla bla.
How many walls does the signal go through to get to the modem for example?
finally got my wireless sorted because i bought a usb dongle.
Now, the only problem is in my flat the signal is very low and i keep loosing connection.
The dongle i bought was IEEE 802.11g MBPS 54. This means absolutely bugger all to me, but....do these figures have anything to do witht the strength of the internet connection.
I asked the people i bought the modem from and they said its good for up to 180 feet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it goes through 3 walls. Im sat by the window now and so obviously its better.
I wasnt expecting it to be 100% signal going through 3 walls, i just didnt know if the dongle had a bigger part to play.
glad you sorted it love.. three walls might be a bit of a struggle, the one im using has a full signal but im right under where the router is i cant get a signal if i go like ten feet into the dining room pretty gat really but just the way it is..
IEEE 802.11g refers to the data transfer protocol used by the dongle. 54mbps means it can transfer a theoretical maximum of 54 mb per second.
I'm guessing you bought this off eBay because of the way you said you'd asked the people you bought it off. If so the problems are being caused simply by the build quality of the dongle. I'd recommend you go to PC World and buy one produced by a good brand such as Belkin or NetGear. They tend to be more powerful. If it doesn't work you can always return it...
