Wasn't it to do with Fiat past bad history, then they release the Punto, which became one of the most popular hatchbacks of all time (in Europe). Which completely changed the way people looked at Fiat.
(I also think Jeremy Clarkson influenced the vote a bit, as he does have a soft spot for Fiat!)
