It's NTFS, not NTSC (well at least you didn't say PAL )
I would re format as you will still have win 98 settings with XP which can lead to problems, as I tried this once.
You will not need a boot disk, if you are running XP from a re formatted hard drive,
go into the bios and change your startup from detecting a floppy disk drive to cd-rom, save & exit.
Load cd, and on start up, the first screen after (press del to enter bios) it will read the cd and tell you to press space to continue reading the disc and start installing XP.
You will then need to delete the partition
create a new partition
(this makes sure everything is wiped off, and no going back)
Having windows 98 on your pc can change the next screen, it should say
Format using NTFS [quick] - this is quick format mode
Format using NTFS - takes longer but I would recommend as you may still have some win 98 settings that the quick mode may not entirely get rid of.
You may also get
Format using FAT32 - which is the file system for win 98
then it's straight forward from there.
this is just a rough guide, some of the wording is not entirely accurate, but is somewhere near what it says during installation.
NO way should you be getting 65-70 minutes remaining.
40 mins max for a pc with that spec, and even that changes to 15 towards the ending of installation, and goes down much faster than, more like 5 minutes.
I think it's XP conflicting with 98, and that's why it's freezing.

As for the b/b modem drivers it should be
install from cd
restart
plug modem in to spare usb in back of tower while pc is starting,
let it detect at startup
insert your username and password into the dialer and connect
should be as simple as that, if not then the modem drivers and maybe NTL are crap, if it's not that simple then somethings wrong somewhere.

He has NTL cable, like he already mentioned. Piece of piss to setup, all you need is to install the network card drivers (if WinXP doesn't already install them for you) and you're away.Originally Posted by armoredfist2002
Phill is right. Formatting your PC on a regular basis i.e. 1-2 times a year will help to keep it running well.
In this day and age i'd recommend you format your HDD's in NTFS format when ever possible. I won't go into NTFS but in simple you can take control of security/sharing over all physical disks. Good to block hackers etc..
Thanks for your help guys.
I'll have a go at re-formatting, and install from scratch.
I've got an ethernet connection on my pc, that I haven't got to work yet, so hopefully that will work with XP, as I am using a USB BB modem.
cheers
if you don't know what your doing, it's gonna end in tears
I installed/un-installed OS's before. Just can't seem to get the hang of all my on board goodies, sound, ethernet.....
