I have bought a set of wheels and Nokian winter tyres for the Jag. I've already noticed a huge improvement in grip and stability now the weather has dropped below 7c.

It's a bit early to discount any snow this year. Last year it was snowy up till late February/March up here.

I guess it all depends how much driving you do and whether you really have to once the snow hits the ground but as mentioned, it's not just about snow. Below 7c the efficiency of most summer tyres is greatly reduced so winter tyres are better.

But as with anything you need to take a look at your own situation. I live in a village and drive all over the UK for my job. I also live in the Midlands which IMO is usually one of the most southerly areas to get snow. If I lived in a town in the south east I wouldn't bother with winter tyres.

Biggest problem I see is, it's still well north of 7 degrees here

I agree though, the snow isn't expected for another few weeks.

Chris .. are you saying there's no heavy snow in the south east or something?

I kept my winter tyres off until Christmas Day when the weather turned here. It's been at most 8c here since when I've been driving that is.

I'm not saying it doesn't snow in the SE I'm saying that it's rarely as severe as it is the further north you go. I definitely wouldn't bother if I lived in a major city.

    I'm impressed

I hear they work well when its colder than 8 degrees too

i expect that van was constantly pushing a block of snow a few feet thick along in front it presumably it must limit airflow to the rad?
doubt he would have got as far if the van had only been front drive.......winter tyres on or not

    Haven't I already said that?

Yes it's not just snow they are designed for but living in the SE in a city transport links are generally better so there's less need to use your own car.
