    Identifying Noise

Got this really annoying noise that seems to have slowly developed to a point now that its got to be found and sorted.

It seems to be from the back passenger wheel area. Comes in proper at 36mph-its there at higher speeds just that its not as noticeable. Like a rubbing noise. Its constant rather than an intermittent rub rub rub.

Ive just renewed the rear discs and pads and caliper slider pins but the noise was there before so it cant be owt to do with that. I think wheel bearings are much noisier than a low down rubbing type noise. Ive removed the small arch liner from the front of the rear wheel well as that showed signs of rubbage against the tyre but again it made no difference after.

wondering if its an issue with the caliper maybe......I cant think what else could cause it. the handbrakes been backed right off to check for binding. not that either. any ideas?

What kind of noise is it? If its a kind of whirring noise it's probably a wheel bearing like freeman said. Worn axle mounts can cause squeeking aswell but wouldn't usually be continious

yeah it could pass for a whirring noise.il spin the wheel tomoro and see..

if its the bearing is it common for the axle stud to be mullered at
the same time (hence new trailing arm) or are they generally ok?
also do the old hubs and bearings come off easily or are they usually a pig? just concwrned ill make a start at home destroy the bearing then leave myself up creek with no paddle.

every now and again i get a binding noise from the back
suspension like something was stuck then frees itself.doesnt do that very often but maybe the arms bushes are mullered????

Not sure about the axle stud buddy. Generally the longer their on the harder it is to get off.
Not sure about tht kinda noise you described but the trailing arms eventually fail, as do the axle bushes

well had a look today.seems both brakes are binding.
not sure why but when i put my new pads in the caliper
was very tough to get back in place to put the bolts in suggesting the
problem could be overly stiff springs on the pads.
pads out and the disc spins nice with no noise or binding.
pads back in and the disc binds......
got the right pads .gt3 1997 rear pads.calipers are the iron type and
the pads have the extra steps that earlier pads didnt.
i cut the springs short and that cured it but the outer pads
are free to move back and forth about 5mm so thats not really
a long term sokution.ive ordered a different make of pad mintex when i had
    apec before......

They are binding ? Try and eliminate either hose or caliper, undo bleed nipple and push the pistons back... If it Is easier to push when nipple open I'd replace hoses. If no difference I'd strip the pistons and clean/re-seal... If your trying to free the pistons use dot4 fluid instead of duck oil /wd

hiya.im gonna undo the bleed nips and see if the pistons are easier to
wind in as they were quite stiff when i was renewing the pads but cant see how replacing the hoses might help. surely a stiff piston will be a fault with the caliper piston ie seized or partially seized.....unless im missing something. all the lines are goodridge braided not the standard rubber which I have heard can collapse on themselves over time. the hoses should be pukka but i will check for any that might have kinked.

Your right the hoses shouldn't be a problem unless kinked... I was thinking the std rubber ones. Just out if intrest... The back plates/heat sheilds aren't catching the discs?

Work the piston a few times lift the rubber up and drop a little dot4 in, push them back and press them out. Not to far tho or your gonna find a nice piston on the floor covered in gravel good luck lol

generally speaking the hoses dont kink.. just a stuck piston pretty common on older cars or cars that have been sitting up for a while!!! pull it out and push it back in a few times and it should be ok as becky said. also you should notice if the seals are ok or not their only about 20 yoyo over here (ireland).
    best of luck buddy
