I had a mk1 craked one that did tge same.
the last few days i've had a really strong smell of fuel in the car. I traced the leak to the fuel pump sender. When the car is running, the top of the unit is filling with fuel and then dripping from underneath the car. If i change the unit, will this solve the problem, or is there a problem elsewhere causing this to happen? Any help would be great guys thanks.

I'm not sure what the hell is going on with it. There's like a white plastic bit at the top. When the car is running, it fills up with fuel until it overflows. I can't see any cracks or any reason it should be doing this.
One of the outlets are going to be cracked i reckon.
