to skim or not to skim

Whats the rule with skimming heads when they they come
off engines that havent been cooked or blown the hg on?
If no warping is suspected and the surface is pretty flat is there
any need to remove any material or is it just good belt and braces
practice to skim off a few thou?

Also whats best for cleaning up the top of the block and
    pistons whilst the heads off?

You shouldn't need to skim it, but check for cracks, they are hard to see.

Thanks guys.no wont have it skimmed then now.i didn't
see the point tbh but best to check.as the hg was fine i mite
as well renew the water pump casing to block gasket cos there
is no obvious place where ive been losing some coolant slowly
(max to min every 2 weeks).......ive read up on cams and i think
a couple of my lobes are egg shaped unlike the others which are
more pointed.car ran fine if a bit tappy so again i reckon the
cams still ok.......looking forward to the rebuild now.

sounds like your cam is badly worn, ideal time to upgrade,

did you undo the head bolts in the correct order?

if anyone knows of a good machine shop in birmingham let me know. somewhere that does spark erosion. i was going to take the head to cylinder head services in Bilston but this is the one thing they dont do. looking really for a one stop shop.
