Nothing to stop you selling an 'illegal' car, you could sell a car with bald tyres for instance, as long as its brought to the attention of the buyer, which he has done in regards to the speedo
And if its a private sale then its buyer beware anyway

Sorry mate , iam afraid 'buyer beware' far from being poppycock is actually a recognised in law, I didnt say I agree , in fact i dont! but many people dont realise thats the case with private sales
Private seller doesnt have to disclose anything other then if the car is theres to sell! Ie not stolen or on finance!
So expecting people to tell you if everything is working and safe on a used car is naive unfortunately.
I would never buy a car and believe everything the buying says. All they are concerned with is making some money whether they are trade or private.

Why are you selling it mate?
Haha why? Do you and beu have some kind of beef! Thats crazy
alot of speedo's sit on a pin until 10/15/20mph so in many cases during the mot it would not be driven at a high enough speed to check the speedo, plus as i said its got the be obviously defective, we dont have to test it.
why are you picking on the 'speedo' issue and not the fact its got a de-cat alike many cars on here, which is far more likely to be found to be illegal, no one is permitted to drive your car to check the speedo works.
i had the maserati and my grande punto (ie a car with bad mpg and a car with good mpg) i sold the grande punto and while looking for something else economical to drive, i found the gtir, so i bought it! i shouldnt of but i did lol, but now driving 2 cars of which i am averaging 12/17 mpg is not good! i really need to buy a diesel.
