What is this for

This is probably a stupid question, but if I don't ask I won't find out, on the first picture there seems to be a hose going onto this metal pipe,
on the 2nd one its no longer there what is it for? And can it affect the car thanks guys

that is a breather pipe that comes from the top of the petrol tank. goes to the carbon canister thing in the wing for emissions. people remove them sometimes.

Ok thanks alot! Do you think this not being plugged in could be causing the engine management light to stay on? I'm going to do a blink test in an hour or so but thought I'd ask anyway cheers.

If you unplug the carbon canister it may throw the eml
