Triumph stag water gauge temp problem ...??

Right the triumpth stag went into a garage for a clutch and everything was working spot on but once the clutch was done and on way back noticed the water temp gauge not moving up from cold so obviously rung up the garage and they said they made sure everything thing was work but clearly it wasn't ... So started doing for checking so .... First test was to see it I had power at the gauge and I have 12v there so checked the water temp sender but still no joy.. They tryed to earth out the sender but still no joy!! So next test was to hot wire the water temp gauge straight from the battery and the gauge moves so its not the gauge so now I'm stumped ...... Gonna check the earth connections tomorrow to the engine so if any one can shed some light on this it would be very much appreciated
