    Audi Doodie A6 3.0 V6 BiTDi Quattro S-Line

One of these caught me by surprise on Saturday. These big engined diesels have got some monstrous grunt.

When I got home I had to check out the figures of this A6 model. 309bhp (not that impressive when you consider it weights over 1800kgs) but torque is huge - 479lb/ft from the twin turbo oil burner.

I was behind one leaving Doncaster last weekend and coming off an island the guy caned it. I ragged the GT through the gears and in 2nd I just clawed up a few car lengths to his back bumper then after that he was seriously piling on the MPH and I was beginning to lose some ground (in defence to the GT, only ever so slightly) but still an impressive turn of speed for a diesel. I dare say the 8 speed DSG helps. The 0-60 is just over 5 seconds too and I bet the guy was getting 40+ MPG! No thick black clouds of soot either. I'm left in no doubt one of these would make a lovely comfortable cross country bruiser that would surprise a lot of powerful but not necessarily torquey motors.

It wouldnt have taken much more than another 40lb or 50lb/ft to have outrun him in a straight line, up to say a ton, had I been in front or alongside. Off the lights would have made for an interesting comparison to my 160-170bhp but it was all roundabouts. Anyway thankfully the roads were dry for this minor bit of chicanery.

I got myself a job now so all that waffling about getting an Evil elbow and downpipe can be turned into action That should get me another 100bhp easy!

These things will pull up to the limiter and sit on it all day long now!

I seriously doubt he was getting 40mpg though. I think you would struggle to nurse that out of it, never mind ragging it.

Ive just remembered Clarkson managed to drive London to Edinburgh and back on one tank of fuel a few years back albeit driving it like Miss Daisy with no heater or aircon on.
Think that was an older engine, a V8 diesel still twin turbo, but cant recall the figures.

oh, that might have been the A8.

That's like the race they dont to Blackpool. No real relevance to MPG what so ever ... just huge fuel tanks.

Seriously you will struggle to get 40mpg out of these things.

Diesels are rate fast these days, but considering the cylinder pressures they should be. Just because an engine is diesel doesn't mean it can't perform unlike back in the day.

Just about anything from BM, Audi and Merc is rapid these days!

My Volvo isn't that fast really at 163ps but as it's a 5 cylinder diesel it's got 400nm of torque and can be quite punchy. Certainly surprises a lot of people when they see a Volvo tearing off from the lights.

I was tempted by the D5 engine (I have the older D3) but it wasn't really worth the extra money for the extra power and lower MPG. It has 440nm torque but 215ps.

215ps in old money is 212bhp.

    400nm = 295 lb/ft

I remember my old Peugeot 309 NA diesel company cars back in the early 90s. Just terrible. 65bhp. Ear defenders required.

They have come a long long way in the last few years.
