Has anyone bought and replaced their own screen?
A pal has smashed his and has asked me to look into a cheap repair.
The actual replacement process is very simple, as long as you can get the parts.
Is it the actual LCD that has broken, or just the outer glass?
Only the glass.
The touch function is still fully working.
Im aware we could just replace the glass, but I'm not sure how easy it is to separate the glass from the digitiser.
It can be a proper pig of a job, tbh. I would look at the prices of a glass/digitizer complete assembly, as that would be a much easier 'DIY' job.
Looking at about £20.
Have you ever swapped one over then?
Yeah, done two, just recently, in fact.
Seriously, it is very easy to do. Plenty of how-to vids on Youtube.
Glass alone is almost impossible, glass with lcd is easy enough.

I dropped my iPhone 4S the other week and smashed the screen, the digitizer was fine though. Took it into Apple and they gave me a reconditioned phone (more or less a brand new one) and i kept the remaining warranty I had. Cost £130 but that's a snip considering what the phone cost me brand new (£599 for a 32GB), the hassle free swap (I have everything backed up to iCloud and iTunes Match) and the warranty. Plus I know it's been put together right.
I could have paid a local company £80 to do it but I would have lost my warranty and wouldn't have had a phone for a few days.

As far as im aware you can't just change the glass as its meant to be bonded to the digitizer.
When her indoors dropped hers, paid an ex apple technician (recommended on the sly by someone at the apple shop) £80, he arrived in his mini van thing, sat in it for 15minutes and voila, fixed.
