    Download speeds...

Any boffins or know-it-alls when it comes to this?

With SKY which might already be my downfall!

They quote upto 4mb/s at my location, generally using speedtest its around 2.2mb/s which is ok for me, its ok for playing MW3 etc.

However when I download stuff, whatever it is from wherever its litterally maxing at 270kb/s.

Why is this? I pay for unlimted broadband?! Ive tried all the tricks on Skys website regarding rebooting the router, moving it, sitting next to it etc.

Is there anything I can do to increase my download speed?

    Ta,

Your speed depends on the distance from the exchange to your phone port,
you can install a high speed box ie where you plug your phone in its a form of capacitor
im with bt but i use a high-speed Cisco router.

you can try this too it does work a little mate i do this every few mths to increase my bandwidth by at least 20%.

    Ok here we go...

    1.) log on as Administrator.
    2.) start - run - type gpedit.msc
    3.) expand "local computer policy"
    4.) then expand "administrative templates"
    5.) then expand "network branch"
6.) Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler"
7.) on right window double click "limit reservable bandwidth"
8.) on setting tab check the "enabled"
    9.) change "Bandwidth limit %" to 0

You're done.It would be a good idea to reboot after this.

It all depends on where your downloading from.
    Like my internet is 30Mb

Even though its capable of downloading at 4mb/s if i download from somewhere which has an upload of 2Mb then ill only be able to download about 256kb/s if you get that

Which speed test did you use?
And have you done a line quality test aswell

Yeah line test suggests everything is normal, the Openreach bloke talked me through everything when it was installed other year, got all the correct filters etc.

I doubt im that far from the exchange, which is the green box in the street yes?

We have dogshit internet at work from BT too, maybe its just the area!

Well I can DL at 1.5mb/s on a friends 30mb Virgin connection from Rapidshare, but around 200kb/s max on my connection, just seems abit of a con!

I did my test through the website on my pc, although my router is rated to 300mb i still dont trust it not to drop its signal half way through

The green box on your street is just a main connection point.
your exchange will be somewhere in your area

here is how i understand it dan

computer programs read data in megabytes

Internet speed is rated in megabits

Kbps that is stated when downloading something is kilobits per second

    What are kbps?
kbps or Kilo Bits Per Second is the rate at which 1000 bits of data travels across your internet connection. A bit is the smallest unit of digital information. 8 bits make up 1 byte.

    270 kbps

    270 kilobits

    2.7 megabits

    your speed is actually correct.

aside from throttling issues that will probably be the most you will obtain.

Im on bts 8mb service but the line maximum where i am is 6.4mb
Even though they state my line can only handle 4

i average about 570kb/s on download when im not beeing p2p throttled. however direct downloads will always attain that speed if the server can handle it

a lot of people mistake 8mb/s to be 8 megabytes per second when in fact its 8 mega bits.

Its a bit of a con really to trick people into thinking its faster than what it is.
