The main thing that distinguish between the various models, is the interior.
If you have the checkered, and IMO the nicest interior, its a GT2!

its:
Broom yellow
GT2 interior
GT Wheels in silver
No controls on the steering wheel
Rear badge is fiat logo on the left, punto on the right with GT in red below it
Side skirts are broom yellow
The wing mirrors are completely yellow (no black trim)
The only anomaly is the icv on the rocker cover, I thought that was a "GT1 thing''
Its a GT2 without a doubt mate! My old brrom yellow one was registered in february 1997, that had the late engine, but every other fature the same as you listed above.
My current one is white, and again has all the above spec, but the earlier engine, it was registered 2 months before my yellow one - 31st december 1996.
As i said previously they are parts bin specials, they would of used all of the older 176A4000/"GT1" engines up before fitting the 176B6000/GT3 engines half way through the production run.
This is what makes it confusing when people insist on refering to them as GT1 and GT3 engines, it would be much less confusing to refer to them as early and late engines
is a GT1 engine any different than a GT3 engine? I've only driven the GT3 engined Punto's.
There's a whole thread on GT differences:

reg numbers and log books are complete red herrings-nothing to do with what went on in the factory but regarding the alarm I guess its not impossible to have the old system on a really early GT3 in 1997 but not a late 97 or the 98/99-runout cars. Still doesnt make sense though - are you saying its far more plausible to think fiat had a few old alarms "left over" and to save the company a couple of hundred Lira they would arrange to fit em rather than chuck em? Cant see it myself. It would mean making sure a car further back on the production lines arrived to have the alarm fitted with the different loom that didnt have the feeds to the remote sensor in the boot on new models and I dare say its slightly different behind the dash too with the remote control/immobiliser modules.
Next youll be trying to kid me that a few GT3s rolled off with GT1/2 style mirrors or different side stripes!!
Dont forget the ABS modules changed too from GT to GT over the years.
