    Claying

    I know there is a proper thread on the way for this, but just to summarize what are the main benefits of 'claying your paintwork'?

    Only reason I ask is my friend who is a pro detailer is coming over to clay my old Fiat for 'gratis' later - so just wondered...

    Ok, in a nutshell - claying is an essential part of paintwork preparation, in that it is stage one of a two stage decontaminating phase. It removes the majority of bonded contaminants from your paintwork, leaving it clear of debris and silky smooth to the touch. Stage two if you're interested would be iron decontamination with the use of Iron-X.

    Hope this helps!

    OK thanks.

    Would something like AG's intensive tar remover act in a similar way to Iron X?

    If not I may have to get his opinion on doing that too just so the paintwork is clean and clear, ready for some polish/wax.

    No mate, tar removers and de-ironizers are seperate products with seperate uses.

    The process you'd follow is;

    pre-wash
    rinse
    wash
    rinse
    de-tar
    rinse
    clay
    de-ironize
    rinse

    Then you'd either go down the route of polishing etc, or go straight in with the protection stages.
