so went to get my chrome piping done and apparently ive got a newer shape carb and the elbow wont fit without having to lift the bonnet, so they tried to 'adapt' it with some sort of pipe and they wernt happy with it so they now saying that i need a pipercross filter of some sort that sits ontop of the carb, i think they mean a flat round one instead of the funnel one ive got, are the round flat ones just as good?

As above. Get a refund, stick your replacement airbox on and leave it. You'll not notice any difference over an induction kit.
