Baring power a mapped diesel gives better mpg. If I get a petrol it won't get touched
I would stay clear of an impreza wagon if I were you. Running costs are a lot, and reliability can be a problem. And you'll be waiting for the day when the death knock starts.
I'm assuming you'll be after a classic impreza for 4k. They're starting to look old these days as well!
Impreza wagons are the most pointless cars in existence TBH!
Are signums not going for pence these days?

Bargain for what it is then! Signum is the Signums own worst enemy!
Always like 3 series and 5 series tourers, however they hold they're money quite well considering the market is flooded with them!
M5 tourer, MMMMMMM

BMW E34 shape M5 Tourer!! Awesome cars again but very rare.
If you fancy something Jap - how about a Galant VR4 Estate? They are pretty rapid although not sure on prices.
I wouldn't touch a scooby with a bardge pole. As above they can be an awful lot to run and a 'bargain 2-4K car' can soon see bills matching that value. Then there's the image and the fact they are getting long in the tooth.
