A lot of people understand the work thats gone into it, and cars like it. The problem is it's a very niche market (same with most highly modifed cars). No-one will pay that for a Punto no matter how modified or how fast because you can get something pretty nice these days for the same money.
It's like that 1000bhp R34 Skyline that was on e-bay for AAAAGES for £75,000 and probably still hasn't sold. Yeah it was a monster but for that you can have a GTR AND M3 CSL for example!
There are big pitfalls too with buying a modified car, you don't know exactly what's been done, by who and how. For us, most of the fun is doing the work ourselves so that's most of the market for a car like Mike's already gone.
