If you look above the brake pedal, there is a white bit of plastic with a button on he end, this is called the brake switch, it is basically a button works on the same principle as a clicker pen, when the pedal is pressed, the 'button' will release, which in turn will turn your brake lights on, then when the pedal is released it will then push the button into the 'off' position so to speak, thus turning your brake lights off

Maybe you have a wiring problem or earthing problem!

Honestly can't imagine a tiny plastic switch needing lube...

If you press the switch with your finger do the brake lights work?

it varies, some time it does and some times it dont, you can wiggl it about and find a place where they will work temporarily, and then they'll just stop

You obviously have a problem that isn't solely or directly that switch.
