    see thats why you dont understand then! patch panels are used as a conveinence rather than anything as a network engineer you are always plugging in and unplugging ethernet cables and ethernet cables only have a number of times before they break therefore replacing a ~100m cable isnt feasible hense the need for patch panels as they are a go between from pcs to switches

    anyway cabling is irrelvenant its the equipment the network designer has put in place typically a firewall and some form of management suite
