as virgin is fibre as well you wont get any signal loss though fibre thats why virgin are the no.1 suppliers. i also have virgin installed in my uni house and it has a black netgear router and i have to say its shite with range. I have an old N router spur'd off that currently for it to reach my room because if i connect to it i get 1 bar 24mbits but i get a very big packet loss with my other router tucked away in the corner of a room away from anything electrical im now getting 3/4 bar and very good speed.
do an broadband speed test if you feel its the broadband letting you down but remember its up to 50megabits so 50megabits realistically is 6.25megabytes.
