Thinking to buy a MK2 for around £1000 to 1500. What are the mk2s like? Reliable? Any common problem I should look out for before buying?

Yes they are OBDII.
Common problems varies a bit between engines...but generally the faults found acorss the board are steering column problems resulting in loss of power steering, ecu failure, wiper push-rod bearing failure(so only 1 wiper works or they judder like hell) and usual HG problems.

the power steering fault usually occurs on the earlier cars. Buy a decent trim level one - base spec ones are horrific. 16vs dont have the same problems with HGs as 8vs. Plus you could even say the 16v is "nippy" which you cant say about the 8v...
