    Headgasket?

Right, basically had my mate come over and look at my car, and he believes the head gasket has gone and water is getting into one of the cylinders and causing a missfire.

But there is no exhaust gases in the header tank.

Is there any thing else it could be?

if it is headgasket, is there any guides on how to do it? as iv passed my test, dont have the money to pay my mate labour to do it for me, but im not stupid and have some mechanical knowledge (mostly bikes as thats what i went to college for). so was wondering do you think i could do it?

Quite simple on the 8v FIRE engine :

    Disconnect Battery
Jack up front drivers side wheel, remove arch liner.
    Remove airbox
    Loosen timing belt cover
Slacken timing belt tensioner, remove belt.
Remove throttle body, masking tape all electrical connections, plug fuel feed/return and open fuel filler cap to prevent leakage.
    Remove top camshaft cover.
    Remove Exhaust Manifold/Downpipe.
Remove any other connections from inlet manifold such as Coolant Temp Sensor.
Remove Head Bolts in the Correct Order
    Remove Head

Opposite to refit, clean all surfaces (block etc. and have the head skimmed). New Timing Belt and Tensioner.

Workshop manual is a very good investment widely available for around £10 and talks you through the whole process.

If you need any help pm me, I have a compression tester you can borrow to test.

Other signs are overheating, white gunk in your oil, on the cap, and oil in your coolant bottle.

You will notice the car is missing a beat.

    I'm in Ipswich.

Also to change a headgasket and to do the job properly you need a torque wrench, new head bolts, gasket, and ideally get the old head once it's off pressure tested and skimmed so you know it's not got any cracks etc, and is ready to go back on. Alot of work required.

see i have different opinions here and there and its hard to decide what to do, people who are in the buisness are telling me not to get new bolts and skim head as its not cooked or anything.

And victoria cheers, but i think my mate has one and i got a torque wrench, and im going down norwich way to fix it at my mates.

Heres the question, how would it be to drive in small periods, i believe its not cooked as i said its just a small missfire you can hear atm, no white gunk or anything like that. Takes ages for fan to kick in so its not heating up quick (no temp gauge so cant tell that way) iv let it just idle for 20 mins or so and fan doesnt kick in.
