Have you cleared all the old oil out of the exhaust?
right my mates got a 2003 saab 93 vector sport 2 ltr turbo.
he's a nice guy 2 nice infact. he lent his nephew the car for about a year.
1 day he gets a call saying the car is smoking.
picks the car up smoking was an understatement.
long story short.
cars covered about 50k
blue smoke bellowing out & pretty much 0 oil in car.
did a compression test wet & dry pretty much all the same.
tried a new turbo hoping that wud be ok.
smoke still billowing & wudnt clear.
not step was rebuilding the engine.
complete rebuild top & bottom.
bores etc had no marks, crank was perfect
so all shells etc renewed
turbo rechecked by place of purchase.
now car is back together and still smoking badly.
on startup it throws clouds of blue smoke out, same as when the turbo seals are shot.
after around 5 mins of holding revs at around 2k it clears.
car drives perfect boost's as it should sounds perfect.
you can drive around no smoke then stop at lights & huge clouds of blue smoke again.
once u start driving smoke will clear altho not everytime.
on boost no smoke at all.
coming off boost no smoke at all.
turn engine off restart & huge clouds of smoke again.
half the symptoms sound like valve seals and the other half like turbo seals.
also the car is eating oil big time.
any ideas?
sorry about the essay
Have you cleared all the old oil out of the exhaust?
yep everything got cleaned out & after the drive its had would of burnt it out.
all boost sytem needs cleaning again now
Have you replaced the valve steam seals? If not I'd try a new set. Sounds like it could be, and seems everything else has being replaced.
stem seals where done as well
cracked valve guide?
is your crankcase breather free of blockage? if not then it would force oil through the turbo oil seals!!!!
1st thing we checked & its clear
well if its rebuilt then someones cocked up & its not done carefully properly, next thing i would check is remove the inlet mannifold and look into the ports to see if there is heavy amount of oil leaking down the stem's would indicate stem seals, they can be easily ruptured whilst being fitted!!!
If its not stem seals and you have cleaned up all the pipes intercooler and burnt off the oil in the exhaust system its deffinatley going to be rings problem, maybe its not fitted right way up!
rebuild is good. just put a cheap 2nd hand turbo on and all problems gone.
so back to shop with the turbo that has supposed to of been refurbed twice now.
