    Kit Car Project..

I thought it was about time that I posted up my first project up, as im not doing much to the Punto...

Went down to stafford a month ago to pick up a 'part built' kit car, that i bought on Ebay.

    Included was-
    'locost chassis'
    'Caterham body panels'
    4x escort mk2 alloys
Type K atlas rear mk2 axle
    2 bucket seats
    Steering from a mk2
    Loads of brackets/ random parts...

    Few pictures-
The trusty Volvo... (20mpg on the way back at 50mph)

As it stands at the moment-

First job is to strip it back to bare metal, as some of the welds need to be re-done, then it can be painted. Then its time to get it up to the stage of a rolling chassis..

Is that a polite way of asking how much it cost? lol.

£800- which i thinks pretty reasonable, considering fully built ones go for
    £5kish on ebay!

Theres a fair bit of work to do, but ive got no deadline so its all goood!

Not nessacarily lol. Was curious but no idea what they go for so if you thought it was cheap you had a bargain

Chassis looks more homemade than i thought it would. Any plans for what engine you will be fitting?

Woudl love to build something like this but right from scratch with all new parts but oviously that would cost £££££'s

At least theres one person showing an interest! cheers. lol.

Im currently looking for a sierra donor car with a 1.6 pinto engine, cheaper insurance. Then hopefully in a few years time some sort of 2.0
A lot of the Chassis are home made for kit cars, this one was built by a 'professional welder' but judging by some of the welds im doubtful!

Im living at my parents as im only 18 so ive got most of my wages to spend on it; which is the main reason im doing it now! Do it whilst you still have the chance; although saying that kit cars are becoming gradually more popular so 2nd hand parts are becoming a little more expensive and the government have stuck their nose in so you get strict legislation to follow

Ah those were the days lol. Im only just 20 but not longer living with the rents so most of my money gets sucked into my landlords pocket

Concentrating on getting the punto finished before i start anything new lol. Once thats finished (god knows when, ages probably) it will free up the garage and will no doubt be keen to start something new. Already got too many cars lol. Two on the drive and one in the garage and the misses ouside the drive lol.

Good luck with the project and will be interesting to see progress. Charged Vtec sounds good

Ha-ha, this goverment are an intrusive lot, true. But they've always been so for cars, IIRC. The "killer" for my Davrian being the minimum headlight centre's placement, 2' if I''m not mistaken, which resulted in the Davrian's ridiculous "Alsatian's ears" pop-up h/l pods, which were atrocious looking and didn't fit nor work at all well, due to the huge springs they'd decided upon for raising them. Plus mine was a semi-raceweight version and the hinge points weren't any too well bonded in or have enough "meat" around those areas of the front section (can't call it a bonnet really).

Anyway, enough of that, are you intending to use it for track days, eventually, or just summer motoring, as open-top speedsters like the Sevens and your look-alike mean serious chill factor when pushing hard (none too good for the hairstyle either but you're probably not a "girlie girl" anyway, I assume?)? My best mate had a nice Seven and later an original but slightly tatty Elan (unlike Emma Peel's in the Avengers), so I know whereof I speak.

Anyway, good luck with the build and don't hesitate to ask if there's anything you need.

I take it by this that youve been there done that with the SVA reg's (now IVA). Just summer motoring at the moment and maybe a few track days when its all running properly and i get used to the oversteer madness ive been promised! No windscreen on mine so ill have to man up! Im from up north so it shouldnt be a problem
Sounds like you know what your talking about (ill take your word on the avengers!!) so If theres anything i need Ill let you know!

Update- Done a trial fit of the bits and pieces that I have and...

Decided not to go for Independant rear suspension, because the chassis has had mounts welded up for the Atlas rear beam. This also means a bit more weight over the back end...

The seats are too wide- So aswell as a re-trim they need bringing in by an inch or two to fit into the space.

At the moment just painting brackets and wishbones. Also if anyone knows of a Sierra 1.6 Pinto on carbs for sale let me know! Cheers.

    Mark.

Another update..... I just wish photobucket didnt take sooo long!

Ive found a donor car; 1600 pinto'd sierra. The engines now out and in a trailer waiting to be trial fitted into the kit car.

The chassis has been sanded down and pained up- what a pain in the ar*e!

Went down to stoneleigh kit car show last monday, picked up some Fibreglass seats ad Sabelt harness's..

.. so its slowly getting there!

One reasonably tidy and rot free donor...

Picture of the fuel tank, that I spent ages flatting down and polishing- it was covered in years worth of overspray!! Bad news is that it doesnt fit- so Ill be on the hunt for a different one!

Picture of the painted up chassis. The roll bar hasnt been done- reason being, im getting it sprayed up with the body panels.

Sierra- having the wiring loom and general cr*p ripped out of it!!

    Had to be done^^^!

The engine was taken out with the help of a ramp and my dad after a heavy night round town- hence no pics!

This is how the previous owner had an alarm fitted

mk2 escort front calipers sprayed up- the paint hasnt taken very well, so these will have to be re-done at some point.

Atlas rear axle painted up- im just waiting to find someone who will supply drums and shoes, because atm I cant find any

Just a general update, will add more pictures when i get them of the camera!
    Cheers, Mark

Mine was a Mark 5, (Mark 4 pictured here: http://www.john.rawlins.com/ndr1/_wp...wp549565ea.gif) bought when they were still in Clapham (I lived in Clapham North for a while). They redesigned the front in later marks to sort that problem, but you can see the self-modified workaround another owner came up with in the picture towards the bottom (looks like Clan Crusader wings cut into the original front). Ian Carter (Imp tuner par excellence) mentioned in the text, was building me a dry-sumped, 1149cc, "stroker" engine (steel spacer plate to cater for the longer stroke) when his son was killed in a car accident and I hadn't the heart to chase him about it.

Anyway, supercharged or no, your project's coming along nicely. Ford engines are highly tuneable and quite strong, in general. Plus they're pretty cheap to modify as there's been a long history of Ford engines in motor sport, so there's plenty of competition in that market.

Keep up the good work and let us see your progress, when feasible.
