A business machine needs to be totally secure. As well as licensed virus protection with regular updates I would recommend a firewall with strong protection.

Depending upon what info a business stores on there machine, and what virus manages to infect, it could mean customer information being leaked which would effect the data protection act.

Free is good, its free! But its not always the best product for the job, as it doesnt have the funds to support 24/7 production on updates which is the main thing.

I believe in that philosophy, which is why I never truly trust a product that is free. I'd rather pay for something and have piece of mind, knowing my money is going towards helping the company improve their product, and their service.

You're both stating the obvious though, really. Grisoft (the people behind AVG) are a proper company themselves:

Grisoft has 43 employees, 26 of whom are specialists in the areas of software development, virus analysis and detection, and technical suppport. AVG AntiVirus is currently used by more than 8 million users around the world
They are no different to the Nortons and McAfees of this world that charge you a fortune for virus scanning software which AVG is completely on a par with (and in some cases better than). Updates for AVG are very regular and it offers all the features of the aforementioned software.

I work for a software company and we run AVG on every workstation. We have a hardware firewall and to be honest, its one of the most secure networks I've ever used. We have a permanent internet connection, a flood of emails every day with attachments and we have not been infected for about a year.

There's a lot of crap written about virus protection. A virus scanner is a relatively simple piece of software and you cannot rely totally on it (regardless of how much it cost and who made it) to keep you virus free.
