The older model
no other symptoms? From what i remember its pretty much the same fault a lot of older ps3's had, bad solder connection on the GPU, or in your case (by the sounds of it) the CPU, caused by excessive heat. You can attempt a re-flow but these are always temporary fixes and wont work or last forever. My advice based on personal experience would be to sell it for spares and buy a slim
ok mate thank you
Agreed, it would be a temporary fix, at best. 'Reflowing the solder' is a very dodgy practice, and it only takes a small amount of flux to short two pins on either the GPU or CPU, which is not good.
The only way to 'repair', would be to completely desolder the chip in question, and then resolder it back onto the pcb, a time consuming, and, ultimately, expensive process.
This is why Sony do unit exchanges; the customer gets a repaired unit, then the faulty units can then be correctly examined by a technician and repaired, if economically viable.
It may be worth ringing Sony customer services, see if they can offer an exchange unit? It'd be cheaper than buying a new one.
top idea craig thank you
You'll be suprised how much sony charge (£125 last i heard) and only give a limited warranty on a replacement board which has been re-balled. Slims can be had quite cheaply, mate of mine bought a brand new console for £150 in Sainsburys a few weeks back
Found one for 110 it will be here tomorro thanks guys
Glad to be of service.
