Hi mate, you would polish the lacquered wood veneer in the same way you would the bodywork. A lighter polish would be advisable, since you say its only got light scratches.. Hope this helps.

    Matt.

Even when you are careful with the surface of a piece of wood veneer furniture, accidents do happen. Even every day use will result in light scratches of veneer if you are not exceptionally careful to lift, rather than slide objects across the surface of a veneered table. If not properly protected during a move, deeper scratches can scar your veneered furniture. There are several do-it-yourself repairs that you can attempt before going to the expense of a professional repair service or replacing the veneer.
    Tools and Materials
    ,,,Furniture cleaner/polish
    ,,,Furniture wax
    ,,,Clean Rags
    ,,,Nut meats (walnut, pecan etc.)
    ,,,Iodine
    ,,,Denatured alcohol
    ,,,Wax scratch filler
Credit card (plastic putty knife of similar thickness)
    Step 1 - Clean Surface
Use high-quality furniture cleaner to remove all dust and dirt from the surface of the wood veneer furniture. Pay close attention to the scratched area. Dry the cleaner completely with a clean rag. Next, apply furniture wax and buff thoroughly with a clean rag. Wax will remove any small scratches from the surface. Concentrate on the deeper scratches to be certain that the area is very clean.
Step 2 - Nuts and Iodine
First, dye the scratched surface with shoe polish, a brown crayon or iodine. Depending on the wood veneer, you would use differently aged iodine. Iodine darkens to a deeper brown color with age. For wood veneer furniture of mahogany veneer, use new iodine. Use older, darkened iodine for brown or mahogany stained cherry. Make a solution of 50/50 iodine and denatured alcohol to stain a walnut veneer scratch. You can also use the meat of a black walnut, pecan or a Brazil nut to dye the surface by rubbing the meat of the nut directly into the scratch. Do not allow the meat of the nut to get on the rest of the piece, or the oils will stain the veneer.
    Step 3 - Wax Stick
Using a wax stick that matches the wood veneer furniture veneer to be repaired, push the wax stick into the scratch. Using a credit card or similar plastic object, burnish the wax level with the surface of the veneer. After the scratch is completely filled with wax, you can add grain lines with a small art paint brush. Apply a paste wax over the entire surface and hand polish.
step 4 - Commercial Scratch Repair
After cleaning the wood veneer furniture thoroughly, pour a small amount of scratch repair over the scratched area. Smooth the solution into the scratch with a putty knife. Remove excess repair liquid with the putty knife (credit card). Apply paste wax to the entire surface and hand buff with a clean rag.
    Step 5 - Apply Heat
After cleaning the wood veneer furniture, heat up a clothes iron without water. Be sure to pour any water out of the iron as steam may melt the glue. Protect the surface with a clean cloth. Hold iron over the scratched area (do not touch the surface with the iron). Every once in a while, the heat from an iron will raise the surface of the wood veneer furniture and it will make the scratch less noticeable. This will allow for an easier repair.
