The law specifies the level of light transmission through glass. The front windscreen has to allow through 75% of available light. The two front side windows have to allow through 70% of available light.
The legislation does not allow for different interpretations it is quite clear. It does not refer to the construction of the glass, or make an allowance for adding tinted film, it refers to light transmission into the vehicle.
You cannot lawfully add a tinted film to glass that would reduce the light transmission value below the figures quoted. Most glass found on modern vehicles are already tinted at the maximum and have the code AS1 (windscreens) & AS2 to indicate this.
A vehicle which does not allow through sufficient light may be prohibited and the driver will be prosecuted.
Hope that helps! You have been warned

I was pulled by cops for vehicle inspection last week - he said about front tints, sunstrip, exhaust. He said he'd have a chat with vehicle inspectorate to verify if things were illegal...
I've had to remove sunstrip coz wipers go over it!
I've only got light smoke tints (legal tint) on front and rear windows but because windows have natural tint on them already, the 'legal' tints actually make windows illegal!! Can't drive at night, otherwise he said I'd get done for them, leading to court case and max fine of £3000! but for 1st time u'd be fined couple hundred £'s! Not sure what the hell I'm going to do about the windows, will eventually need to drive at night but don't wanna take them off! Any punto's with untinted glass from manufacture, which I could then tint? Suggestions??? :?
As far as exhaust goes....don't think they can do much! they go by decibal limit and mine sure aint louder than a TVR!

Ive got a sunstrip. Standard ****ing wipers go almost to the very top of the screen  so you could legally get yourself a 1 inch strip if you wanted to follow their rules. Else I suppose could buy shorter blades...
Think mine will be coming off MOT time or I might try and get one done on the inside so it doesnt restrict wipers.

regarding the exhaust it isn't down to a specific decibel rating it is down to any deviation from the original exhuast system that is an increase in the db rating. ie if its louder than standard its illegal.
good job i have little or no regard for automotive laws lol.

Thats the law for motorbikes not cars.... My supersprint exhuast was 100% legal until I added a decat pipe to it - it passes all TUV tests (as you get written proof when buying one) etc etc and that was considerably louder than a standard exhaust.
I *think* the noise limit is at the discretion of the officer who pulls you over?? I've never had it mentioned to me when i've been pulled, and thats happened a good few times.

vehicle inspectorate told copper that it shouldn't pass MOT as it is coz I have removed middle pipe?? but I thought it was ok as long as you have the cat. not sure if this was just the copper's talk! He didnt seem as bothered about this as he did with strip and tints!
Any ideas about the tints??? do i have no choice but to remove them? I reckon it'll look sh*t with only back windows tinted!

I havent got a mid box on my exhaust. Supersprint sell the cat back system as a straight through pipe from cat to back box. That passes all the German TUV certification which is harder to pass than this countries laws. Thus I'd guess he is speaking bollox.
Also my car has passed its MOT at an AA test centre without a mid pipe and also at an independant place. Neither of whom mentioned it.

Pathetic.
Isnt it absolutely pathetic, that the Police spend their time pissing about over a little bit of tinted windows, rather than doing some real work and stopping innocent people getting beaten up or women mugged/raped etc.
Pathetic.
When the Police start doing a proper job, they will get more respect from people/us.
They just pick on silly easy things like tints/exhausts etc
Fair enough if its stupidly loud, but most are OK.
If those people carriers have tinted windows, then im keeping mine, sorry but not one rule for one and another for the other.

Whats the matter with your tints?
If you get pulled most will just tell you to peal them off. Or what I have been thinking about is getting clear untinted glass and then getting that tinted.

It would be fair enough stopping people with tinted glass if it turned out that more crashes at night into pedestrians, cyclists etc occured due to people having too dark tints.
